Starting from a solid artistic and cinematographic foundation, you will learn the main tools and workflows used in both animation and VFX studios to develop the final look of scenes, adjusting the lighting to the visual effects footage or painting with light following the concepts and key colour frames provided by the animation art team. Learn how to optimise scenes and prepare them for composition by gaining in-depth knowledge of the main rendering engines used in the industry. At the end of the master's degree, you will work on a group project supervised by your teachers, using the pipelines and production dynamics of some of the most important animation and VFX companies in Spain.

Module 1
Cinematography and colour
Audiovisual narrative
Reinforces the fundamentals of audiovisual language and the narrative resources used in camera work and lighting in animation and VFX productions.
Photography and camera
Consolidate your knowledge of the fundamentals of photography and cameras: aperture, shutter speed, lenses, types of light sources, HDRI imaging and environment maps, the fundamental basis for 3D cinematography.
Lighting and colour
Learn the fundamentals of colour and lighting in 3D, both creative and technical lighting, and apply them to a scene with different lighting and narrative intentions.
Module 2
Fundamentals of Shading and Lookdev
Attributes and materials
Learn in depth about the main 3D attributes and materials that interact with the light in scenes and their settings to achieve the desired style, while maintaining optimal performance in the scene.
Look dev and rendering
Improve and develop the artistic result of the scene lighting according to the visual design and key colour provided by the art department, or the footage or plates provided. Learn the work dynamics of the look development phase with the main software used in the industry.
Module 3
Lighting for Animation and VFX
Lighting and rendering scenes (workflows)
Master the software used by leading studios for lighting scenes and sequences, learn how to prepare scenes for rendering, the iterations allowed by different software, and how to optimise and render scenes to achieve the desired artistic and technical results.
IBL (image-based lighting)
Learn how to use HDRI images and information from the shooting environment of the plates or footage provided to illuminate 3D elements and achieve their correct integration into the scene.
Rendering engines
Delve into the technical aspects and working methodology of the main rendering engines used in the animation and VFX industry.
Composition fundamentals for lighting artists
Learn the fundamentals of digital composition and how to use professional software to compose different render layers and integrate them with other elements in the scene.

AI tools for lighting and composition
Discover emerging tools that use AI to facilitate, improve, and optimise lighting and rendering work for 3D elements.
Introduction to real-time rendering engines
Learn the fundamentals of real-time rendering engines and their use in virtual production techniques.

Group project and demo reel portfolio
Master lighting and rendering increasingly complex shots by applying professional studio techniques. Learn how to create and structure a solid demo reel with ongoing guidance from your teachers.
